An experimental determination has been made of the design requirements for a cabin cooling system in the Sea King Mk. 50 helicopter. The purpose of this system is to bring the cabin environment in the helicopter to an acceptable level for effective crew performance. Cooling was provided by an experimental vapour cycle cooling system. Results of the trials have been used to formulate a heat transfer model of the cabin to enable prediction of required cooling capacity for extreme climatic conditions. A comparison, based on the trials results, is made between the performance attainable by a vapour cycle cooling system, and an air cycle system using the available engine bleed. (Author)
