Basic and practical studies were conducted on the application, to high-strength rails, of the two methods of heat solid-phase welding with pressure, flash butt (FB) welding and gas pressure (GP) welding, both of which are commonly used for railway rail welding. It was made clear that in the case of FB welding the properties of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of various types of welded high-strength rails can be reduced to carbon equivalent, and a rehardening process was established for the new head-hardened (NHH) rail whose HAZ softens due to welding. Also, new high-strength rails, NS-Type I and Type II, which show excellent properties of joints in the as-FB-welded state were developed. Further, matters which must be considered when the JNR-type GP welding is to be applied to large-section NHH rail for export or to NS-Type II rail for domestic use were clarified, and an optimum welding procedure for this application was established.
