Ever since the first spectrophotometric observations were made of the Moon more than a half a century ago we have been aware that many areas of the lunar surface differ in both albedo and color, that the properties and composition of the surface materials of these areas must also differ, and that these differences are of geologic significance. Conventional photographic techniques have been singularly inadequate to record these rather subtle areal differences. The required sensitivity could be provided by a system of reflecting optics, beam-splitters, interference filters and high resolution black and white film designed to record at specific narrow passbands between 3,000 and 10,000 angstroms. Selection of the spectral regions will be determined by current laboratory, field, flight and observatory studies. (Author)
