The European certification process developed by the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) is described against the background of the total JAA activity. The progress from developing common regulations in the 1970s to the present arrangements for joint certification and maintaining continued airworthiness throughout the lifetime of the aircraft is summarized. The relationship of this work to the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) and the European community is discussed. It is suggested that this developing JAA certification activity meets the legitimate needs of the European and worldwide aircraft manufacturing and operating industry.
