A substantial body of research has established that illuminated, commercial signs play a critical role in providing both wayfinding information and more general situational awareness to motorist at night. By supplying drivers with important navigational cues at critical decision points where traffic signs and even GPS systems leave off, illuminated on-premise signs clearly play a role in traffic safety. This traffic safety contribution is especially relevant after dark, when both visual performance and environmental cues decline and fatal crash rates are three to four time higher than during daytime.
