STS-27 was launched on December 2, 1988, and completed a successful 4-day, 9-hour mission with five crewmen aboard. The mission was a Department of Defense (DOD) classified mission and the second mission in 1988. The Medical Operations Branch at JSC and the Operational Medicine Office at Headquarters participated in many of the NASA return-to-flight review programs. The primary objective of the medical operations program is to assure the health and well-being of the flight crew during all phases of the mission. Specifically, the three main objectives are to: 1. Provide routine and contingency medical support; 2. Monitor, evaluate, and maintain crew health status throughout all phases of the mission; and 3. Test medical procedures, systems, and Detailed Supplementary Objectives (DSOs) designed to facilitate future missions.
