The impact behavior of stiffened and unstiffened square aluminum panels under fixed boundary conditions was investigated experimentally and theoretically, and the ultimate energy-absorbing characteristics were determined as a function of geometry. The effect of rigid, closed-cell foam (2-lb/cubic foot urethane) on an unstiffened panel was also investigated. A geometric scaling law was developed to extrapolate experimental results to sizes needed for the underbody collision protection system fo surface effect vehicles for Arctic operation. Protection levels were determined as a function of allowable vertical impact velocity and craft weight.
