In 1970, Michigan published an evaluation of a profile measurement system developed earlier by the General Motors Corporation. This concept, known as the GM Rapid Travel Profilometer, has been used since 1979 for ride quality acceptance testing of new pavement construction. Contractors were concerned that measurements made after project completion did not allow corrective measures during construction. This project was developed to design a pavement profiling instrument that could replicate RTP truck results but was light enough to travel on new construction. This would facilitate daily corrections if necessary. The report describes development, construction, and testing of a lightweight pavement profiling instrument. Recommendations for use and further development are included.
