The study starts with an analysis of how the volume of traffic, the geography of the route, and institutional and marketing factors influence itineraries and ship size and speed. This is followed by an analysis of present operations and a review of traffic forecasts. Following this a set of itineraries representative of the main options are selected. These are used as the basis for a parametric computer based study of the response of shipping costs to itineraries, ship size and speed, load factor, fuel costs etc.
