The purpose of the program was to evaluate the performance of an improved driver restraint system for subcompact vehicles. The restraint system consisted of an air bag deployed from an energy absorbing steering column and an energy absorbing knee restraint. Test methodology consisted of controlled impact sled tests using anthropometric test devices and unembalmed cadavers as driver surrogates. For each test, the response of the surrogate was to be thoroughly documented with respect to the criteria established in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 208.
