The objectives of this study were to evaluate what is currently known about the scope and nature of the driver-alcohol problem among vehicle drivers in general and heavy truck drivers in particular, and to identify and assess prospective countermeasures for the identified problems. In this volume, work pertaining to the general driver-alcohol problem is reported. A discussion of the nature of the problem, focusing on the way in which alcohol impairment effects contribute to accident causation is presented. A review of accident studies is followed by a brief review of experimental literature. This is then followed by a summary of work conducted on the identification and preliminary evaluation of countermeasure concepts.
