Vol I of the final report contains accounts of contemporary research and theory of eye movement behavior. Of primary interest in this research is the visual input occurring during car driving that facilitates control via development of a concept of the ever-changing environmental conditions in driving a motor vehicle. In investigating a driver's visual input, it is important not only to consider information available at every moment, but information actually used in steering. The analysis of a person's eye movement behavior can distinguish between available information and the specific part of the environment upon which a driver actually fixates. Essential information input is obtained from those parts of the visual environment which are successfully fixated upon. (Author)
