The report assesses the state-of-the-art in headway sensing and signal conditioning applicable to single-mode, automatically controlled guideway vehicles (ACGV) operating at less than three times the required stopping distance from a second vehicle. Headway measurement approaches break down into three general categories: (1) vehicle-mounted systems; (2) guideway-mounted systems, and (3) profile control. All available or potentially available systems are included which can operate safely under the following system parameters: measurement distances from 10 to 500 feet; (2) vehicle speeds from 10 to 60 mph; (3) vehicle capacity from 2 to 15 passengers; (4) vehicle accelerations less than 0.3 g, and (5) line capacities of 6,000 to 45,000 people per hour. The report catalogs for each system physical characteristics such as accuracy, size, reliability, and power; digital computation and signal conditioning equipment; system functional flow diagram; system costs, and significant communication, data handling, and data encoding/coding problems. The survey stresses near-term application of vehicle-borne microwave sensors, wayside detection, and sensing nets to measure range and range rate between vehicles. (Author)
