The dependence of transonic flow phenomena on Reynolds number gives rise to serious problems in the extrapolation of results from existing test facilities to the conditions of full scale, and in model-scale simulation of flight conditions in ground-based facilities; at the same time, the transonic flow about a given body can only be predicted with limited success, particularly for the flow about a complete aircraft. With such considerations in mind the Fluid Dynamics Panel sponsored this Specialists' Meeting on Facilities and Techniques for Aerodynamic Testing at Transonic Speeds and High Reynolds Numbers. Its main purpose was the advancement of our understanding of the tools needed in the future, particularly for testing sweptwing aircraft, slender-wing aircraft and space-shuttle vehicles, in the transonic speed range, so as to clarify what techniques need to be developed, and what facilities are required.
