The work was part of the European DRIVE II project. A sign was erected at the side of the road conveying collective feedback on the proportion of non-speeding vehicles. The experiment was carried out at two test sites, one 4-lane motorway and one ordinary main road. The experiment was based on the assumption that drivers adopt to a behaviour which they consider to conform to the social norm on the road. Therefore it is important that they know what is the behaviour of other drivers. The feedback sign led to a reduction of 2.72 km/h on the motorway and of 1.23 km/h on the ordinary road. The sign had a stronger effect on private cars than on heavy vehicles. It was further found that the sign had a speed reducing effect on speeding as well as on non-speeding vehicles.
