The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is concerned with the safety of high-speed rail technology proposed for possible application in the United States. This report, one in a series of reports pertaining to high-speed rail technologies, presents an initial review of the French high-speed train, 'train a grande vitesse' (TGV). The report describes the background leading up the development of the TGV system, the potential U.S. applications, and the technology in some detail. The document also reviews FRA regulations that may be applicable to the design of this train relative to any potential U.S. application.
