The design concepts and interface requirements for a Mars rover are presented. Design restrictions are discussed and five alternative vehicle types are suggested. Design fundamentals are reviewed. Methods for stowage and deployment are dealt with. The subsystems are discussed with regard to mobility constraints, sensors, traction turns, hazard detection and avoidance, chassis wheels and drive, power system, thermal systems, telecommunications, and data handling. Some scientific applications and operations are outlined with regard to payload baseline and data budget (computer and storage), telecommunication link, and optimization. Mission optimization is summarized with regard to launch/arrival windows, seasonal effects, landing site possibilities, and operations.
