The requirement for aviators to operate under stressful circumstances raises concerns over both safety and effectiveness. Although appropriate countermeasures for stress-induced performance deteriorations are available, the implementation of these counter-measures require that commanders know the time-course and extent of the problem. For this reason, the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory has focused research on the practical assessment of helicopter pilot degradation using flight performance assessments which combine enhanced automation and objectivity with optimized data analysis procedures.
