The nature and magnitude of changes in the mesospheric ozone densities that result from changes in the solar ultraviolet flux and the interrelationship between ozone and water vapor and its photodissociation products in the mesosphere and between ozone, water vapor, and nitrogen dioxide in the upper stratosphere can be studied using five instrument packages carried on the solar mesosphere explorer satellite. The satellite configuration consists of an observatory module and a spacecraft bus which houses five instrument packages. The launch vehicle and the characteristics of the instruments are described. A mission profile is included with launching windows. The first of the OSCAR series spacecraft is being flown as a secondary payload. This amateur radio satellite from the University of Surrey is described as well as its mission objectives.
