Helicopter operations pose many visual problems for aircrew. These range from factors degrading vision both externally and internally within the cockpit, to the protection of aircrew against ocular hazards. This paper discusses the importance of ocular physiology, visual standards, transparency optics and cockpit lighting systems in ensuring an adequate level of performance. Ocular hazards from impact, nuclear flash, chemical warfare agents and lasers are discussed and related to the advantages and disadvantages of protective equipment. The paper concludes with a review of some of the devices currently available for visual enhancement and the problems associated with their use.
