This report covers the Standard Avionic Module (SAM) study performed by Vought Corporation under Contract N00123-77-C-0094, Work Assignment 0008 for the Naval Weapons Center. The purpose of this study was to propose the characteristics of a standard module based upon the data and conclusions of previous Navy studies. The proposed module should satisfy the greatest majority of requirements enumerated in the final reports for those studies. The data base and reference reports were reviewed to determine those factors which significantly affect the selected size of a standard module. Each of these factors were analyzed based upon a compilation of data from the reports and conclusions reached on each individual factor. These factors in each area are: Functional Commonality; Connector; Integrated Circuit Packaging Technology; Weight and Volume Constraints; Thermal Considerations; Built-In-Test, and Reliability.
