This paper considers some of the reasons for increased integration with emphasis on Flight Profile Control in combat aircraft, largely in the ground attack role. Some of the reasons for further integration involving flight control are examined. Next the paper looks at the various phases of flight and highlights particular problems to be considered. Having suggested trends or solutions in the more important specific areas, the paper suggests that future work will consist of developing particular capabilities, concentrating on the relationship between pilot and total system, learning how to control the design of such a closely coupled system and handling the important problems of testing, reliability, maintainability and the attainment of minimum economic configurations which will satisfy all these goals. The need for flexibility in any system which combines automation with a high degree of pilot participation is stressed.
