The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) currently monitors about 7,000 traffic count sites including over 300 permanent Telemetered Traffic Monitoring Sites (TTMSs). The monitoring equipment generally consists of traffic-actuated sensing devices imbedded in the pavement that captures the information traffic volumes, vehicle classification, and truck weights. The information captured by the field monitoring devices is thereafter downloaded and processed to get information on Annual Average Daily Traffic (ACT), K-factor, T-factor, truck weight, and other pertinent information. This information is used in various forms by different FDOT departments for planning, designing, operations, and maintenance activities relating to both highway pavements and bridges. The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (COE) was contracted to provide support to the Transportation Statistics Office (TSO) of the FDOT in improving the accuracy and reliability of the TTMS sensors and communication equipment.
