A full-scale railway track incorporating ballast mats was built in the laboratory as a replica of the track in the Willemspoor tunnel at Rotterdam including its maximum gradient of 27%. Tests were carried out to assess the possibility of the ballast mat creeping down the gradient under the combined action of dynamical vertical loading and (optional) axial rail forces. Also tests on track without ballast mats were performed for comparison. Only under the most severe loading condition (combined vibration and longitudinal loading) some retarded elastic displacements of the ballast mats were found to appear. In all cases no significant permanent displacements of the ballast mats were measured. There is also some indication that in the case of direct contact between ballast layer and the concrete tunnel floor (no ballast mats used), a less homogeneous and elastic behavior might be expected possibly resulting in poor track alignment.
