A review is presented of the experimental work continuing the failure analysis conducted by Thermo Power Corporation and Brooklyn Union on a temperature and pressure (disk fusible) relief device (PRD) manufactured by Mirada Research and Manufacturing Company. The study was stimulated by the recurrence of almost identical failures of the Mirada Generation III PRD that is in service on numerous compressed natural gas (CNG) bus properties throughout the United States. The field tests collected temperature data as actual buses were refueled. It was considered the only definitive means of determining whether the theory that a Joule-Thomson temperature depression, caused by a small orifice restriction in the Mirada shut off valve, was causing a thermal cycling of the PRD. Results of testing on two bus properties: Brooklyn Union's Triboro Fleet and the Capital Metro bus fleet are presented in the appendixes.
