The need for robotic camera enhancements are examined and it is suggested that a camera having edge emphasis, dynamic range compression, and insensitivity to overall exposure level would be an excellent aid to a robotic vision system. Efforts to develop the ability to use the technique of unsharp masking in an electronic, real-time camera, are discussed and system considerations are outlined. The development of the microchannel spatial light modulator (MLSM) is described as the basis of the robotic camera concept. It is noted that existing techniques in MLSM are not capable of performing the required image subtraction in a linear manner, but this difficulty was overcome through the development of a technique of grid biasing. In addition, an entirely electronic method for defocusing was developed. It is concluded that the proposed concept for robotic camera improvements is technically feasible.
