The document covers the technical feasibility of developing a very heavy aerial lift vehicle to be operational by 1990. The mission spectrum for such a vehicle was assumed similar to the proposed QMR for the heavy-lift helicopter except that the payload requirement was increased to approximately 50-60 tons. Shaft-driven and tip-driven helicopter concepts were given major consideration. Power-plant and transmission development and problems relating to subsystems, such as load handling and control, are treated. Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) concepts that are not high disc loading are discussed. (Author)
