An evaluation of the altimeter installed in a B-25 aircraft was conducted to determine the feasibility of using the Altimeter as an altitude and altitude-rate sensor for all-weather landing applications. The Altimeter, a tracking-pulse radar, employed a leading-edge tracker to develop d-c voltages analogous to altitude and altitude rate. The evaluation included both flight tests and laboratory tests. Altitude and altitude-rate accuracies were determined from 186 data runs over runway terrain and water. Phototheodolites and ground elevation surveys were used to determine aircraft altitude-above-terrain. Altitude-rate data were obtained from phototheodolite space-position and time data. Altimeter outputs were recorded on an airborne oscillograph and correlated in time with phototheodolite data. Altimeter performance was also checked over approach lights, grass, trees, dirt, and buildings. It was concluded that it was feasible to use the altimeter as an altitude and altitude-rate sensor for all-weather landing applications. It was recommended that the deficiencies detected during the evaluation be corrected and that the altimeter be operationally evaluated in an aircraft equipped with an all-weather landing system.
