The Acoustic Containerless Experiment System (ACES) is a materials processing middeck payload to be launched for the first time on STS 41-B from the Kennedy Space Center. This will be the first of two planned launches for this payload. The objective of ACES is to demonstrate a three axis, high temperature acoustic levitation furnace, and determine variations in the acoustic characteristics and acoustic levitation capabilities of the furnace chamber with variations in temperature. The automated sequence for this payload will take about 2 hours to complete from the time it is turned on by the crew. The enclosed Mission Operation Report contains further details related to this mission. Details with regard to the STS 41-B flight are contained in the STS 41-B Prelaunch Flight Operations Report No. M-989-41-B.
