The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Environmental Impacts of Aviation Committee (AV030) issued its first report on critical issues in aviation and the environment in the United States in 2004 (1), followed by revised editions in 2005 (2) and 2009 (3). This revision updates and expands upon the previous circulars while maintaining their cross-disciplinary approach to reviewing subjects of interest to the civil aviation community in this country. It consists of nine individually authored sections representing the author's expert opinions on issues that address the major environmental media affected by aviation activities and the key processes that link aviation and the environment. As before, the focus is on the state of science, rather than on policy, and on identifying priority research with the potential to yield benefits during the next several years to several decades. Each section is divided into subsections that: Define the critical issues in the subject area; Discuss the current state of practice, research, and policy; Define a vision of future capabilities that would address the critical issues; and Identify specific research needs to help achieve the vision. This circular focuses on research conducted in the United States, although international activities are discussed where public or private entities in this country are closely involved.
