Organized atmospheric and space environment support for aerospace vehicle design and operations came into being in the 1950s as the development of large rockets for military and civilian usage grew in the United States. This support focused on the development of natural environment models, design/operational requirements, and environment measurement systems to support the needs of aerospace vehicles, both launch vehicles and spacecraft. It encompassed the launch, ascent, and entry flight environment regions, including Earth orbit environments. Several groups within the United States were active in this area, including the Department of Defense, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and a few in the aerospace industry. Some atmospheric environment support efforts were similar to those being undertaken for aviation interests. As part of the atmospheric and space environment support activities a number of lessons learned resulted. These produced follow on efforts that benefited from these experiences.
