The study of the Mariner-C/S-01A interface design has been undertaken because of significant changes in this spacecraft configuration as compared with that of the Mariner R. A most significant departure in the Mariner C design is the changed location of a high gain antenna; which, in Mariner R, is located at the Spacecraft/S-01A interface. The Mariner C antenna location permits a simplified interface with the S-01A, and this simplification will be an objective in the design of a new S-01A shroud and spacecraft support system. The existing Ranger-type shroud and spacecraft support system will not accommodate the Mariner C spacecraft. In the course of this study, a number of shroud configurations were studied which would meet the mission requirements. A resume of the principal conclusions and recommendations relative to the study is given. It was found that using pyrotechnic separation of a clamshell shroud, and a conical payload adapter with V-band clamp separation of the spacecraft -- offers the most reliable approach to interfacing the spacecraft to the S-01A.
