Self-service fare payment for the rapid transit industry is a new field. Studies indicate that the graduated fare structure is an economic necessity for attracting passengers and, in addition, is the most equitable fare plan for the passenger. Consequently, the prototype automatic graduated fare collection system designed and developed by Advance Data Systems for the Bay Area Rapid Transit District fulfills these requirements and, in addition, provides for automatic data accumulation to aid management in auditing and statistical analysis. The prototype system uses the concept of stored fare to provide the passenger with a convenient means of self-service rapid transit, and the district with an efficient means of automatic fare collection. The key to the system is a magnetically encoded machine readable ticket. Encoded on the ticket is a certain amount of fare value (stored fare). Therefore, for any trip taken on the transit system, the fare for that trip is machine subtracted from the current stored fare value of the ticket and the ticket is returned to the passenger. In this way, the passenger may ride the transit system for as many trips as the stored fare value will permit. When the value of the ticket is reduced to zero, the ticket is captured and the passenger must purchase a new ticket for his next ride. The details of the prototype system and how its stored fare concept is used to actuate the automatic functions of the fare payment system are described in the remainder of this report. (Author)
