The use of a GEOS type satellite, launched either by Ariane or by a Thor-Delta rocket, to intercept the nucleus of Halley's Comet close to the nucleus was studied. Present knowledge concerning comets was reviewed. The scientific objectives and a model payload including a lightweight camera, spectrometers, instruments for analyzing dust and plasma, and a magnetometer are described. A mission description including launch mass and launch windows is presented. Spacecraft structure, system configuration, thermal control, data handling, and power supply were analyzed. Scheduling, for the mission and development planning are proposed.
