Recent progress in the understanding of noise transmission in propeller-driven airplnes since 1985 is reviewed. The discussion includes airborne and structure-borne noise transmission and passive and active noise control. It is concluded that the following work is required before current results can be implemented in an actual airplane environment: (1) development of a detailed structure-borne noise model for typical airplane structures, (2) development of improved passive noise control treatments tuned to propeller noise harmonic components, (3) implementation of active noise control methods in typical aircraft environments, and (4) improved understanding of noise transmission through aircraft structures made from composite materials.
