Extensive research programs have been conducted at MBB and at AFWAL to investigate the application of active controls for the suppression of wing/store flutter. A flutter suppression system was developed and flight tested on an F-4F aircraft. The control law was designed by MBB using optimal control theory to minimize the control surface motion and to provide the required stability margins. During the test it was found that the dynamic behavior of the wing-pylon-store changed considerably with excitation amplitude due to free play and preload. The active flutter suppression system worked well and provided an increase in flutter speed. (Author)
