Special transport is at one extreme of the many different types of services which now constitute public transport. It is special in the sense that it caters for specific individuals or groups of people and/or specific journey purposes. Examples include social services, education, health service and most voluntary transport. A number of different organizations are involved, public, private and voluntary, often with primary functions unrelated to transport provision per se. Co-ordination has become the popular slogan for moves to improve special transport services. In this paper the aim is to examine the co-ordination issue in some detail, including both its pros and cons.
