Three instrumented vehicles, a 1991 flexible fueled Taurus sedan, a 1991 Taurus wagon, and a 1992 Aerostar van, have been successfully developed and utilized in real-world vehicle performance and emissions studies over the last several years. All three vehicles are capable of monitoring and controlling a variety of engine operating parameters. Limited studies were performed which compared vehicle emissions and operating parameters during real-world and under dynamometer driving conditions. The results support the use of dynamometers to simulate on-road performance during steady state conditions, but further testing is necessary to establish the utility of dynamometers to simulate real-world driving conditions.
