The car industry started at an early stage to reduce pollutant emissions and initiated research on the dispersion and effects of airborne pollutants. The problem is reviewed from the view of commercial vehicles, including European exhaust legislation for passenger cars and commercial vehicles (gaseous emissions, diesel smoke, particle emissions, exhaust legislation) and the share of commercial vehicles in the total emissions. The main goals of development in commercial vehicles are named (low fuel consumption, low emission, low noise), and suggestions are made for further pollutant reduction (NO emissions, exhaust recirculation, other combustion technologies, alternative fuels). A status report is given on soot filter technology, diesel catalysts, diesel fuel and exhaust emissions, national exhaust limits, and European noise regulations. Asbestos-free friction linings are mentioned. (ERA citation 13:014951)
