The report describes an on-site social survey of the short term effects of aircraft overflights on visitors to three Forest Service wildernesses. Three Forest Service wildernesses were purposively selected for study on the basis of two primary and five secondary criteria. The major criteria were levels of visitor use and aircraft overflight exposure. Wildernesses were also selected to provide a range of ambient sound levels, ecotypes, visitor activities, day and overnight use, and exposure to helicopters as well as fixed wing aircraft. Interviewing was conducted during peak visitor seasons at three wildernesses (Golden Trout in California, Cohutta in Georgia, and Superstition in Arizona). Attempts were made to exhaustively interview visitors during the data collection periods in each wilderness.
