The purpose of this program was to assess the total particulate matter burden contributed by motor vehicle traffic. Size-segregated aerosol samples were collected upwind and downwind of cut, fill, and at-grade concrete freeway sections. Elemental analyses of the samples were performed to determine the selective contribution of exhaust emissions, roadway abrasion, tire wear, and degradation of moving parts. Results were combined with weather data to determine dispersal patterns, and the contribution from other sources. The results of this program show that in the areas adjacent to the downwind side of freeways the particulate burden is greatest for fill-sections, intermediate for at-grade sections, and least for cut-sections.
