The report was prepared on behalf of the Commission of the European Communities and examines the influence which conventional and new permanent magnet materials will have on the use of electric motors in automobiles. The properties of the competing PM materials are reviewed, particularly the behavior of Nd-Fe-B. Alternative processing techniques and the availability of raw materials are discussed and related to materials prices. The performance and dimensions of permanent magnet machines, the influence of alternative PM materials and the extent to which performance and size improvements will enhance the operational characteristics of automobiles, and electric vehicles in particular is studied. The present and likely future use of electric motors in automobiles is looked at, and the developing use of PM materials, the benefits to vehicle components and the improvement to the automation and control of many functions in private cars, is examined. From this the demand for PM materials is calculated. The report includes Tables and Figures and a list of references for further reading.
