A series of rudders with a geometric aspect ratio of 1.5 but widely varying section shapes was constructed to determine the effect of section shape on the cavitating performance of high-speed rudders. Experiments on four of these rudders operating behind a propeller were conducted in the 24-inch, variable-pressure water tunnel over a cavitation number range from 4.0 to 0.5 and an angle of attack range from -35 to +35 degrees. The propeller ahead of the rudder was operated at propeller loadings of 0.07, 0.15, and 0.20. (Modified author abstract)
