The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that the total economic cost to society of motor vehicle accidents was $74.2 billion in 1986. Included in the loss are medical costs, productivity losses, property damage, legal and court costs, insurance administration, emergency service costs, coroner and medical examiner cost, public assistance administration and government programs. These costs resulted from traffic accidents which caused over 46,000 deaths, 3.4 million injuries, and 45 million damaged vehicles. The report contains tables which summarize economic costs by injury level and cost category.
