An AC Electric Propulsion System, consisting of a high-speed gas turbine and direct-coupled alternator, static frequency converters, and AC induction drive motors, demonstrated its feasibility in an operational system. A four-wheel earth-moving vehicle, patterned after the U.S. Army Universal Engineer Tractor, Rubber Tired, was used as the test bed for the electric-drive system evaluation program. System operation was evaluated in static dynamometer testing and vehicle operation over a test course. A computerized performance prediction program was appraised for its suitability as a system design tool by comparing calculated plots with vehicle performance. (Author)
