For the period 1999 to 2004, U.S. container imports (TEUs) increased by 58 percent, while container exports rose by 22 percent. In 2004, Asia accounted for 60 percent of U.S. container trade (imports and exports), up from 55 percent 4 years earlier. On the U.S. side, the top ten U.S. container ports accounted for 88 percent of U.S. container trades. Over the last 4 years, container trade through these ports grew at about 5 percent faster than overall U.S. container trade.
