This survey of inland waterway traffic has established a number of important features about the industry. Firstly, the total volume of tonne kms on inland and estuarial waterways has been shown to be thirty times greater than those of the British Waterways Board alone (78m). The revised figure represents nearly two percent of inland domestic freight transportation. Secondly, the majority of this traffic is, in fact, in ships (87%), and only 19% does not pass directly to or from the open sea. Thirdly, domestic traffics are dominated by the movement of bulk traffics, normally to or from waterside sites. Petroleum products account for 31% of all tonne kms. of domestic traffic, followed by aggregates. Finally, 39% of inland waterway traffic is direct to or from other countries.
