During the summer of 1964, a national public opinion survey was conducted to probe attitudes toward civil defense, active urban ballistic missile defense (BMD), and related issues. The survey was sponsored jointly by Office of Civil Defense and Advanced Research Projects Agency. This report deals primarily with those aspects of survey of direct relevance to BMD policy. Survey results are analyzed with respect to: (1) public knowledge about BMD; (2) current feelings about the desirability of BMD; (3) the changeability of attitudes toward BMD in the face of anti-BMD arguments; and (4) views concerning U.S. cities which sould receive priority attention in urban BMD deployment. Brief analyses are presented of survey results dealing with other related issues such as: (1) expectations regarding world conditions, U.S. defense policy, arms control and disarmament, etc.; and (3) understanding of relevant strategic concepts. For the reader unfamiliar with BMD matters, descriptions are presented of BMD systems and the issues involved in the current BMD policy debate. (Author)
