In the U.S., pickup trucks have become increasingly popular; registrations increased 22% between 1998 and 1992. Concomitant with this increase has been an increase in pickup truck occupant injuries and fatalities. Passenger travel in pickups has not been adequately addressed as an occupant safety issue - both from the standpoint of occupant travel in the cargo area and travel in extended cabs. What would appear as a simple legislative fix - preventing travel in cargo areas - has met with resistance in several states. Reasons for the resistance include inadequate data regarding injury risks and lack of clarity regarding the most appropriate legislation to address that issue. As states adopt legislation to restrict travel in cargo areas of pickups, travel in the back seat of extended cabs is likely to increase. No published data exists on passengers in this seat location.
