This project seeks to provide guidance for dealing with cost and quality issues associated with the collection and management of highway safety data. Four objectives guided the study: (1) Determine the costs currently associated with collecting and managing highway safety data with emphasis on traffic crash reporting; (2) Determine the quality of the data collected for three sources: traffic crashes, roadway inventory, and emergency medical services provided to crash victims; Identify issues which affect the collection, storage, and use of data from the three sources; (4) Recommend strategies for reducing costs, improving quality and resolving other issues which affect the collection, storage, and use of data from the three sources; Recommend strategies for reducing costs, improving quality, and resolving other issues which affect the collection, management, and subsequent use of the data.
